Yunnan Provincial Museum, Kunming

The New Yunnan Provincial Museum is located in Kunming’s south on Guangfu Road in Guandu District, right across the street of Guandu Old Town. The museum houses an exhibition centered on Yunnan's ethnic minorities, as well as a collection of artifacts from tomb excavations at Jinning on the southern rim of Dianchi Lake.

Initially built in 1951, this museum has moved from Kunming downtown to Guandu and has re-opened its doors on 18. May 2015. It covers an area of 150 acres with a building area of 60,000 square meters. The design inspiration of the new museum originates from the Yunnan Folk House, called Yi Ke Yin and the exterior shape of the main building has been inspired by the geological features of Stone Forest.

Yunnan Provincial Museum has 200,000 pieces of cultural relics and offers Exhibitions on History and Civilization of Yunnan. There are 6 permanent exhibitions and 4 special exhibitions on 3 floors. More than 10,000 pieces of relics have been displayed and are systematically showing Yunnan’s historical developments including the nature history of Yunnan, the evolution of human beings in Yunnan, the Neolithic Age, the bronze civilization of ancient Dian Kingdom, the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms as well as Yunnan in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties and the Contemporary Era of Yunnan.

Furthermore, different kinds of special art exhibitions, such as Ceramics, Chinese calligraphy and paintings, the Modern Art Gallery and temporary exhibitions have presented splendid art treasures to the visitors.

The museum also offers a public garden, lecture hall, study center for children, cultural center, video hall, cafeteria, ATM, souvenir shop and other service facilities to the public as an information and service center.
